Completed trimming the baulks.  This produced 14 fragments of tile and 1/3 of a box of pottery and bone fragments.

Preparations were made to draw the area of the trench floor in E138-139/S23-24, picking up the various features -- plaster concentration, pan and covertile fragments, and the stones projecting from the eastern baulk.

The area of the plaster concentration was sketched in.

Work was also begun in meters E136-137/S25.  The area in these meters was left at approximately 88-92 cm b.d. at the end of last season's work.  This area will be taken down to the deepest level fo the trench, approximately 115 cm, achieved last year in order to make the section on the north and west deeper.  The soil in this area is reddish brown with flecks of carbon and very clayey (Locus 35).  This work produced 1 latte box of pottery and bone, along with 4 fragments of terracotta.  Also found were a fragment of a ridged impasto rim (#1) and a piece of worked stone-debitage (#2).

  • Find #2
  • E136-137/S25
  • 88-100 cm b.d.
  • Locus 35 (barrow find)
  • Worked stone debitage

Continued drawing in the features in meters E138-139/S23-24.

Work also continued in E136-137/S25.  All of the reddish clayey soil (Locus 35) was removed to a depth of approximately 111-114 cm b.d., although the cut is rather uneven and needs to be leveled and have the baulks trimmed.

This work produced 1/3 of a latte box and 4 tile fragments.

Beneath the reddish clayey soil in several areas, a yellowish soil appeared (Locus 36).  This soil did not produce any material.  The soil began to appear at a depth of approximately 108 cm b.d.
