AM:

Pick axing commenced once again on the most western meter after taking opening elevations.

NW- 30.12m AE

NE- 30.06m AE

SE- 30.05m AE

SW- 30.05m AE

Center- 30.08m AE

Our first and second pick pass covering 2/3 of the trench, proved to be a continuance of locus 1 . The medium brown soil is full of organic material, namely many roots due to the numerous small to medium sized stumps in the western half of the trench. There are still some small rocks, though very small and few in comparison to yesterday and some pottery and terra cotta has been found. Within the second pick pass a small piece of worked chert was found , the first special find of CB-40. Coordinates and the elevation will be taken once the remainder of he pick pass is sorted.

Special Find #1 :

The next pick pass covered the most eastern meter of the trench. Locus 1 continues across the surface though the soul seems to get slightly more claylike however it is still a medium brown with organic material. In some patches beneath locus 1 in our lowest areas a lighter sandier soil is evident. Picking will eventually continue across the trench in attempts to potentially explore this new soil and eventually work to remove stumps. While sorting through this eastern pick pass an unusual piece of terra cotta-possibly a statue fragment- was uncovered, it will be recorded as special find #2.

Special find #2:

  • Locus 1
  • Coordinates- 104.77s/38.29w
  • Elevation- 30.05m AE
  • Unusual Terra Cotta

Commenced second pick pass through the eastern half of the trench. No addition signs of the new

Light colored soil that was uncovered in the eastern half of the trench. Another piece of worked chert (special find #3) was excavated along with severely worn terra cotta.

Special find #3

PM:

Continued second pick pass of the day pulling back to the east wall. At the same time roots were clipped in the already picked western portion of the trench. Also removed some of the stumps in the western most meter of the trench. After sorting the last pick there was some soil discovered in the southwest corner that is light brown to yellow in color and sandy in texture. There was also a surface of a rock discovered near the west and north baulk walls. It was left undisturbed to wait until more soil is removed to uncover more of its surface before it is removed. The rest of the afternoon was spent trimming baulk walls.

Locus 1 :

  • Terra cotta and plaster- 1 \xbd bowls
  • Pottery- 15 sherds
  • Bone- none
