Sections were drawn of both the southern (G-I/12) and a portion of the eastern (I/12-13) balks of meters G-I/12-13 in order to further document the \'pit-like\' formation (pp. 91 - 92 ) uncovered yesterday in the southeastern corner of the trench.  The southern and eastern balks and the floor of the trench were tehn cleaned down to further define the extent and nature of the pit formation.  The pit would now appear to occupy all of meter I/12 and also extend into portions of both meters H/12 and I/13.  The outline of the pit appears to be delimited at its exterior by a reddish stain about 5cm. thick.  At this point, the compostion of this stain remains unclear.  In addition, a single row of stones uncovered directly behind the reddish

stain may form a rock boundary or lining of the pit formation.  Additional sweeping of the trench floor within the area delimited by the reddish stain and rocks revealed sporadic black patches of carbon and charcoal interspersed among concentrations of disintegrated tile and plaster.

The trench was also extended to the south into meters G-K/1-2.  A 10cm. topsoil cut was completed in these meters.  The soil in the cut was dark brown i color and contained a large amount of small roots and rocks.  excavation fo the area was hindered by the presence of several large stumps.  Only a few small pieces of worn tile were recovered in the cut.

the pit formation in meters I/12-13 and H/12 was swept and drawn.*  Additional photgraphs of the area were also taken.

A 10cm. cut was made in meters G-I/14-15.  The soil in the cut was dark to meium brown in color and of a claylike consistency.  It contained a high concentration of carbon and burned wood, especially in meters I/14-15.  In addition, two pieces of vitrified tile were also discovered in these meters.  The finds in the cut were restricted to meters I/14-15.  Within this area a large amount of worn impasto pottery, including many burned pieces (1 box), bone (one quarter box) and worn tile were discovered.  Samples of the vitrified tile and other burn material were collected for further study.

The topsoil cut completed in meters G-K/1-2 was extended into meters G-K/3.  the soil in G-K/3 was dark brown in color and contained many rocks and roots.  Only a few pieces of worn tile were recovered in the cut.  A second ten centimeter cut was begun in meters G-K/1-2.  The soil remained dark brown in color with many small rocks and roots.  One quarter of a cassetta of small pieces of worn tile and several large coarseware fragments were recovered from the cut.
