The remaining backfill was removed from the trench.  The protective plastic was lifted, exposing the trench floor.  both the roasting pit in meters H-I/11-13 and the rock concentration in meters I-K/13-14 appeared to be well preserved.  Preliminary photographs were then taken of the trench.  A datum reference point was established above the trench on the pichetto demarcating meter K/10 * at a hieght of 20 cm. above ground level.  All subusequent measurements will be taken from this point.  The stump in meter J/12 was removed.  The soil under the stump was dark grey brown in color with many small roots and rocks.  One quarter of a latte

box of worn impasto and orangeware pottery and two small pieces of worn tile were found under the stump.  Work also began in clearing down and levelling meters J-K/11-12 with brushes and mestaline.  This area was already excavated to a depth of ca. 55-60 cm. last year.  The soil in meters J-K/11 was composed of "near" or true galestra and contained no material.  The soil in meters J-K/12, however, was grey to dark brown in color and contained a concentration of small stones and roots.  In addition , a few small chunks of carbonized wood were also found among the stones.  Further clearing will be necessary to determine both the exact points of interface between the galestra and grey-brown soil and the possible significance of the stones in meters J-K/12.

J-K/15-16 at ca. 120 cm.

Meters J-K/11-12 at ca. 60 cm.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
