Daily Log

July 25, 2003

After one shallow pick pass, it was decided that in some areas, the next Locus was missed and intruded into.  It was too late to take accurate measurements for the beginning of the new locus, so two sets of measurement were taken; the bottom of the trench at the moment, and the bottom of Locus 5 as seen in the stratigraphy.  Finds which fall between these elevations will be changed to be provenienced in Locus 6, as well as every artifact which was recovered this morning.  Locus 6 consists of an olive brown soil filled with terracotta, ceramic, plaster, charcoal, and occasional bronze flecks and bone.  It also has white inclusions.

Elevations for the stratigraphic differentiation were:

  • NW (161, 58.5)       27.23
  • NE (164, 58.5)        27.26
  • SE (164, 60.5)        27.26
  • SW (161, 60.5)       27.19
  • center (162, 59.5)    N/A

Elevations for the floor were

  • NW (161, 58.5)       27.17
  • NE (164, 58.5)        27.16
  • SE (164, 60.5)        27.16
  • SW (161, 60.5)       27.08
  • center (162, 59.5)    27.17

Therefore, finds 19 and 20 will be changed to being found in Locus 6.

Locus 6 was excavated.  The soil on the western side is much darker brown than the soil on the eastern end.  There were also many rocks.

Locus 6:

  • 52 pieces of terracotta
  • 2 pieces of bronze
  • 65 ceramic fragments
  • 1 iron fragment ( Find 22 )
  • 3 bone fragments
  • 68 plaster fragments

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
