Description Locus 1 comprises the upper strata of the area of excavation. The site of excavation is a Tennis Court constructed in the 1980s, consequently Locus 1 consists of the upper level of the foundation for the Tennis Court. It is comprised of a light, circa 1cm, course of sand, that lies on top of 50cm of hard compacted clay and packing of small (c. 5cm) to medium size (c. 15cm) stones. This stratum appears to have been a drainage mechanism for rainwater on the courts. Below this is a hard packing of heavy clay-like soil, mixed with many small stones; comprised of limestone, shale, and chert. The soil is a brown-blue and is modelled in this way. Finds from Locus 1 suggest a mixed stratum, with both fine tile and plaster, and more worn fragments with large inclusion. Ancient materials (black gloss pottery, and impasto pottery, worn tile fragments) and modern (e.g. glass and plastic) were recovered from Locus 1.
