Description | Locus 3 consisted of a gray, flaky, galestra-like soil. In all likelyhood, this soil is a redeposition of galestra, which would have occured after the destruction of the 6th century B.C. archaic building; redepositions of galestra similar to this one here are paralleled throughout the site, especially in the archaic southern courtyard. Along with Locus 4, a brown, mottled soil, and Locus 5, a second layer of redeposited galestra, Locus 3 should be associated with the post-archaic-building destruction. Locus 3 was a very thin deposit but contained a relatively large amount of material, given the depth of the locus; 4.5 bowls of tile and plaster, 43 sherds of pottery, and 10 pieces of bone were recovered. Additionally, Locus 3 was the first stratum in which no modern materials were found, indicating that this was the first truly stratified, datable deposit found in T-48. Thus contextual and chronological information can be gained by any finds recovered from this locus. |
