Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Description Locus 3 is a thick fill layer of roughly-hewn boulders and large stones, laid flat. It is homogenous in nature and seems to have been laid as fill for the terrace of the Temple Forecourt (small hexagonal pavers). There is relatively little artifactual material, considering the size of the locus, and it does not extend north or west beyond the Retaining Walls (Loci 4 and 15). The soil matrix is a coarse and sandy, color 5YR 5/6 (yellowish red).
Definition Boulder fill.
Phase Description Phase IV: Nabataean Grand Design: 1st c. BCE to CE 1st c. The remainder of the subterranean canalization is installed including the East Plaza Great Cistern. The East and South Perimeter Walls are installed and Rooms A and B and the Tabun Cave Room are built into the casemate of the East Perimeter Wall. The East Plaza and South Passageway are paved and the temple Forecourt is raised and laid with a small hexagonal pavement. Residential Quarter is built in the southwest corner of the precinct. Also at this time the Central Staircase of Phase II is blocked and the lateral East and West Staircases are constructed to access the Lower Temenos.
Stage Stage 3
Stage Description Packed large hewn stone fill laid creating the Forecourt platform overlying the Lower Temenos Retaining Wall.
