| Description | Locus 57 is the north wall of the "entrance room" with two semicircular doors and one central rectangular doorway (Loci 55, 61, and 98). It is a well-constructed wall of dressed sandstone ashlars with holes for the affixing of marble revetment. It is eight courses high, with an unclear number of rows as the top is obscured by possibly later rubble construction. As one of the main doorways of the bath complex, this locus is phased to Stage 3, the main construction period in the bath complex. Note: During the course of excavation, Locus 57 was incorrectly assigned and then confused with two other loci. Somehow, the information on the Locus Form filled out in the field was for what is now called Locus 20, while the information on the Locus 20 form was actually for Locus 29. Once those two loci were sorted out, Locus 57 was left without any assigned feature. It appears, however, that from the start Locus 57 has actually been meant to be the north wall of the "entrance room," as it is so labeled on the excavator's plan and referenced by other loci as such. It has retroactively been reassigned to define this wall, but as this was done well after excavation was over, measurements have yet to be extracted from Vectorworks. | |
