Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Phase XIV
Phase Description Phase XI: Site abandonment after major collapse dating to the Byzantine period from the CE 4th to 5th c. New drainage systems are installed including that associated with the newly built west precinct wall.
Description Locus 28 represents the soil enclosed by four “walls” – Locus 25 to the north, the two rubble “platforms” Loci 74 and 75, and Locus 29 to the south. It is below Locus 23, the wash covering this south extent of the trench, and is the first in a series of soil loci within this sondage. The soil was a coarse and compacted silt with Munsell 5 YR 5/4 (reddish brown). The soil was quite sandy and had many small rocks in it. Pottery and plaster were also found, and there was less pottery than in Locus 23. It seems that, like Locus 23 above it, this locus is sedimentation. The loci below this one however appear to be dumping, seen most clearly because of the high proportion of Nabataean pottery, occurring much more frequently than could readily be explained by wash. A closer look at the pottery composition could help clarify the locus.

Combined with Loci 1, 2, 23, 24, 27.
Definition Soil between Locus 25 and Locus 29 below Locus 23
Underlies Loci 1, 23.
Stage Stage 8
Phase Description Phase XII: Use levels, robbing and abandonments continue. Upper levels of fluvial wash are deposited. Rooms A and B are abandoned.
Stage Description Continued collapse and sedimentation.
Size 1.60 m north south -by- 3.70 m east west.
Phase Description Phase XIII: Major collapses continue into the Islamic period.
