Phase Description Phase IV: Nabataean Grand Design: 1st c. BCE to CE 1st c. The remainder of the subterranean canalization is installed including the East Plaza Great Cistern. The East and South Perimeter Walls are installed and Rooms A and B and the Tabun Cave Room are built into the casemate of the East Perimeter Wall. The East Plaza and South Passageway are paved and the temple Forecourt is raised and laid with a small hexagonal pavement. Residential Quarter is built in the southwest corner of the precinct. Also at this time the Central Staircase of Phase II is blocked and the lateral East and West Staircases are constructed to access the Lower Temenos.
Stage Stage 2
Underlies Locus 3 overburden.
Description This is the only architectural feature that is definitively shared between the rooms off the South Passageway of the Upper Temenos and the southwest Residential Quarter (Trench 94). The lack of further shared features between these two areas was due to the central portion not being excavated. The nicely hewn and dressed wall is composed of large ashlars that are fitted tightly together. In width they average 1.28 m. The wall extends 11.00 m from where excavation commenced at the eastern boundary of trench 89 to the central portion where it ends just to the east of the entrance to Cave 1. This wall also provides the east wall for Room 1.
Definition Continuation of the South Wall from Trench 83
