| Description | Locus 3, 5YR 3/2 dark reddish brown, a loose, fine, sandy soil, represents the topsoil of Trench 16. Like many of the West Exedra's fill levels, it is tipped severely from the south down to the north. Inclusions were loose stones, washed into the West Exedra and collapsed from the exedra wall, plaster fragments and assorted debris. Artifactual material included pottery ranging from Nabataean to Islamic, stone, glass, tesserae, molded stucco (from a Nabataean column), coins, architectural fragments, etc. During excavation of Locus 3, the second drum of the western free-standing column was uncovered and it was realized that the first column had shifted northward; this was corrected. |
