A.M.

After removing the tarp, the soil was dry enough to begin sweeping again.  Sweeping continued in order to continue revealing the rock layer.  The road surface was reached throughout Locus 1 and the trench was closed with elevations of:

244.9E/ 29.1S  43 cm BD  26.57m ae

245.9E/ 29.2S  50cm BD  26.5m ae

246.85E/ 30.4S   78cm BD  26.22m ae

248.7E/ 31.4S   128cm BD  25.72m ae

248.6E/ 33.4S   130cm BD  25.7m ae

244.6E/ 33.1S  77cm BD  26.63m ae

P.M.

Photographs were taken and CD 12 was closed; today it yielded 6 pieces of terra cotta and 3 pieces of pottery.  Based on the continuation of the pathlike feature visible on the surface and confirmed by Locus 3 of CD 12, a series of extension trenches will be dropped along its projected path.  The first, designated CD 12-A was laid out and opened.  Photographs were taken and opening elevations were:

SW   243.2E/ 26.4S  98.5 cm BD  26.415m ae

NW   243.5E/ 23.4S  100.7 cm BD  26.393m ae

NE    240.6E/ 23.6S  120 cm BD  26.2m ae

SE    240.3E/ 26.6 S  126 cm BD  26.14m ae

Center                       109.4 cm BD  26.306m ae

The trench is 2 by 2 meters with a datum in a tree to the south, with an absolute elevation of 27.4 m.

A pick pass was begun and turned up small rocks almost immediately.  The topsoil was too tough to trowel so a shallow pass was executed throughout the rest of the trench.  An iron nail was discovered ( Find # 1 ).

The pick pass was cleared up and work finished for the day. Locus 1 in CD 12 A yielded 1/2 bowl of terracotta today and 22 pieces of pottery -- including 1 base and 1 rim.
