Some pottery and terra cotta being found, but definitely also coming upon the soil change to yellowish powdery deteriorating rock, which as of yet has not had material in it. During cleaning of Locus 2 , found a piece of Medieval tile (not made a find). Also found a piece of iron slag.

Still cleaning in the western half. While cleaning found vitrified terra cotta, not made a find. Soil change imminent, terra cotta still being found in the deteriorating rock soil, so digging will continue. Roots were taken out and the soil was leveled. One bowl of terra cotta filled and dumped at trench's terra cotta dump. Baulk walling commenced after a light pick pass around the perimeter of the trench. Some terra cotta and pottery found while baulking the trench walls. Medieval pottery found in the baulk wall's northwest corner.

SE Corner: 29.62m A.E.

SW Corner: 29.69m A.E.

Locus 3 is a light brown to yellowish soil that resembles deteriorating rock. There are roots, small rocks, and terra cotta present. No evidence of the bottom of the large stone in the northeast corner. Pick pass done in

the northern three meter by one meter strip. Working around the large stone. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench. Some terra cotta and a small amount of pottery is being found. In cleaning out the dirt a piece of worked chert was found in the northwest corner of the trench.

Pick pass done in the southern three meter by one meter strip. Soil remains consistent with Locus 3 soil, but variations of color in soil are appearing such as white and red. Small amounts of pottery and terra cotta being found. Pick pass done in the northern three meter by one meter strip. Small amounts of terra cotta and pottery and multiple small rocks are being pulled up in the pick pass. Soil cleaned from the pick pass is consistent with Locus 3 soil. There is still

no bottom to the large rock in the northeast corner. There appears to be a small protrusion off the southwest corner of the rock but it is not entirely clear at the moment. Terra cotta and pottery found within the soil pack of the deteriorating rock. Pick pass done in the southern three meter by one meter strip. Small rocks and small amounts of terra cotta and pottery present in the deteriorating rock soil. Traces of carbon found in the southern portion.

PM

Pick pass done all through the trench in order to level the soil surface. Small amounts of pottery and terra cotta found in the sorted soil. Trowels also used after pick pass was cleaned to further level the surface. In troweling the soil, continued to see a mottled deteriorating soil pack of yellow, orange, white, and light brown. Also mixed into the soil pack is carbon and organic material. Baulk

walling done again to get a clearer idea of the stratigraphy in the walls.
