June 30, 1998 AM

Meter N12 W10 was excavated further, continuingthe cut that was initiated through meters N15-13 W10, in order to see the extent of locus 5, olive brown soil with carbon inclusinos, located mostly int he eastern portion of the above-mentioned meters and containing archeological material.  The possibility of locus 5 being a midden was further explored.

Locus 5 in N13 W10 was further excavated.  Pale yellow- pale olive (5Y 7/3-6/3) soil, containing no archeological material was reached at approximately 105 cm b.d. in most of N12 W10, while the soil in a narrow area east of bedrock in N13 W10 was still olive brown (2.5Y 4/3).

Initiated baulk trim.

Pottery and tile count will be done in the afternoon.

In CA42 a drawing of the section with the well wall was done(see page ).

In CA42 the top layer of stones and the inside of the well were cleaned.  Photos taken.

In CA42N trimming of the baulks and leveling of the trench floor was continued in preparation for the section drawing.

Material recovered today from locus 5 included: 57 tile pieces (4 fairly large and well preserved), 14 bone fragments including 2 teeth, 13 coarseware, 15 redware, and 59 impasto fragments.  Also a piece of a large pithos rim was found.  Special finds included 2 unusual pieces of terracotta, a human tooth, and a fragment of impasto rochetto.
