Introduction

The purpose of excavating T21 is to clarify several objectives that relate to the relationship between the orientalizing period structures and the Archaic period structures.  These objectives are to enhance our understanding of the stratigraphy of the area between T22 and T21 of the orientalizing structures around and possibly under T21, and of the southern Archaic defensive wall.

The stratigraphy at the intersection of T21 and T22 west extension is heavily eroded, so it is diffictult to determine whether the statigraphy is the same on the west baulk wall of T21 as it is to the more defined south baulk wall of T22 west extension.  Moreover, most of the previous archaeology in this area has only excavated to the archaic period stratigraphy and this trench will go below the orientalizing burn layer (to bedrock if time permits).

In T21 there is a light frame architectural feature that ixisted in tandem with the workshop further to the east. Excavating this area will clarify if any buildings existed

in between the two structures or at least if any material exists that can elucidate the relationship of the two.

To the south of T21 runs an archaic defensive wall that is connected to the archaic period building 1 further to the west and terminates approximately south of where this trench is. By digging this trench, it will be possible to ascertain if the wall returns north to rejoin the archaic period building 1.

The following trench books are relevent to this endeavor:

For the stratigraphy

For the light architectural structure and T21 in general

And for the southern archaic defensive wall

It is hoped that any answers to these questions will help clarify the relationship of the structures within each respective period and the relationship between the two.

Also, depths for this trench will be measured in terms of "x" cm below the datum point (b.d.). Pottery will

be recorded in terms of latte boxes (16x9x5 cm) and terracotta in terms of cassette (30x50x70 cm) and both will be recorded in approximate number of fragments. Provenance of all finds will include locus # in recording, with special finds also including x,y,z coordinates within the trench.

The trench will be divided into the following meters:
