July 23, 1998 AM

In CA42 the morning started with architect completing the section drawing of the well started on July 21.  Stones exposed yesterday were added to the original drawing (see p. )  Then south-east and north-east corners of the trench were cut back in order to establish a straight south-north section through the well by trimming the east baulk on each side of the well to the depth of 180 cm b.d on south side(pre-existing baulk) and 170 cm on north side leaving a "step" for better accessibility and convenience during the sectioning of the wall.  Photos were taken at this point and sectioning of the well began.  Two l ayers of stones were removed from the part of the wall that has been exposed.  Photos were taken as each layer of stones was removed and soil packed between them excavated.  The soil is 5Y 6/3-5/3(pale olive to olive) contains occasional piece of carbon, roots, and often preserves the shape and consistency of galestra.  A small worn piece of tile was found as well as a fragment of impasto and sheep/goat tooth.

During work in CA42 today 4 stones within the well wall became loose and fell out.  Also the large terracotta piece exposed in the lower part of the wall on July 13 (see p. 93 ) and documented in the drawing(p. 134 ) fell off.  It preserves 2 finished edges and appears to be a ridge pole tile fragment.

The soil between the stones comprising the well wall was designated locus 22.

Work also continued in CA42N, locus 14, meters N12-15 W8-9, leveling the floor and defining the edges of the "feature"  Numerous rocks were exposed in N14 W9, probably breakage from the bedrock outcropping in N12-14 W10.  It seems that in northern part of the locus 14 the bottom of the "feature" has been reached since the soil in N14 W9-8 is still light olive brown (2.5Y 5/3-5/4).  Locus 14 produced 5 bones, 62 impasto and 8 tile fragments today, as well as fine impasto base.

Work began on excavating soil underneath the big stump bordering the "feature" on the south side in N12 W8-9, designated locus 15.  Locus 15 produced a situla handle fragment of red extremely friable impasto.
