The 40cm cut was completed through meters U,V,W - 65. The soil of this cut remained light brown-yellow. An akroterion fragment was encountered in W-65 and work slowed to mestaline. The akroterion is todays find #2 and it was damaged by the pick. The fragments recovered were coated with a 50% PVA/H20 solution at the areas of breakage. Note that a statue fragment, todays find #3 was found immediately adjacent to the akroterion, about 5cm to the south.

A new cut to ~50-55cm was begun in meters U,V,W-67 and extended into U,V,W-65. THe soil of this cut remained brown-yellow but slightly lighter than the soil of the previous cut. A great deal of pithos fragments, (rim, body, base) were encountered in U,V - 86-65 at 40-55cm intermixed with tile. These were cleaned with metaline and removed. There was no evidence of a porfile being present. Note that a great deal more pottery seems to be found at this depth at these meters.

The floor was encountered in W-66 at ~55cm-60cm and picking continuted leaving a layer of earth just above the floor. A large flat stone, apparently

incorporated into the floor was encountered at ~50cm in meter W-65.

Note that the break in the floor in meters U,V,W - 69/70 shows several stones (~20cm x 20cm) imbedded in the break at just above floor level. This may be indicative that this break, as with the break through Q-W, 78, is not simply due to erosion.

Sections of the trench walls, looking west, were drawn for U,V,W at the 74/78 broder and for U,V,W at the 71/70 border.

Note that ~3casstte of pithos fragments were recovered (there were not counted with the tile).

Meters V,W - 66,67 were excavated using hammers and mestaline to expose the terracotta/mortar floor found in this area this morning. Along the northern edge of W-66,67 the floor appears to deteriorate due to numerous tree roots in the soil immediately above it, although the southern edge is in good condition.

The only major find of the afternoon was a pile of 3 pan tiles, one atop another, which was imbedded above the floor in meter W-67. Only the flanges of these tiles were uncovered, as the bulk must be drawn before it can be removed. The flanges have been damaged by tree roots, but though cracked and friable, are still intact. It is not possible to see if the pans are intact or not.
