Red Wall Area - LB Foundation

In the morning, we finished cleaning over the northeast corner of the Lower Building.  The angle inside the room was uncovered in grid H-1, but the outside corner is still covered by the Red Wall and Big Stone areas.  The LB foundations, here as elsewhere, are fairly uneven.  They slope down to the north here in the northeast corner.

The large stones of the so-called "Big Stone Area" can be seen in the .  They rest over the LB foundations but there seems to be an intervening soil stratum.

Dike -- Grids I-K 3

At 8:39 a.m., we moved to the area of the dike which was left between meters 3 and 4 by E. Rystedt in 1972.  Profiles were drawn of this dike by E. Neilsen in 1972 (see {book reference not noted} ) looking west, and by E. Rystedt in 1972 (see ER II p. 254 ) looking east.  Previously (see ER II p. 11 ), this dike was cleaned down to the reddish (pavement?) stratum which lies at the same level as the top of the N-S line of stones.

First, we removed the large stones which formed a somewhat N-S line extending from the Big Stone area to the UB foundations.  Below and amongst these stones was a soil stratum designated "B2" -- it consisted of brownish soil with a few bits of carbon -- but not a burnt layer.  A few bucchero sherds and a number of bones were found in J/K 3.

The stratum below consists of a grey clay -- it contained a very few coarseware sherds but nothing else.  Area left at height of approx. +29.50 m.
