Prepared trench for excavation and opened Locus 1 . Opening elevations were taken and trench drawing (overleaf) was made.
Opening Elevations: Locus 1

N.E. 123 cm BD = 27.97m AE
S.E. 110 cm BD = 28.10m AE
S.W. 90 cm BD = 28.30m AE
Centre point 105 cm BD 28.15m AE
Picked across the trench through topsoil. Removed some small rocks, and recovered small and worn pieces of tile. Locus 1 is a very dark brown soil, filled with small stones and many roots. A number of large rocks and stumps are to be found in the trench.

Excavation continued this afternoon. Two pick-passes of the trench were completed. Many roots and small stones were removed. Soil is becoming a lighter colour. Some very small pieces of worn tile were recovered.
