The topsoil in meters beta,gamma-71 was removed to bring most of these meters to ~15cm. A large stump which occupies much of gamma-71 was left in place. Now the entire extension, X,gamma,67-71 has had the topsoil removed and lies at ~15cm in depth.
Work with mestaline began in meters X,Y-68-70 to expose the floor which lies beneath earth in some parts of these meters. The floor was seen to "break" in meter X,Y-69 as a small fossa seems to run through it, adjacent to the column base in X-68. At this point it is still unclear as to the extent and condition of the "floor" in these meters.
Work continued with mestaline at removing the ~20cm of soil above the "floor." A concentration of pan tiles, pointing front ends up towards the sky was found in X-61 near the trench wall. Also, two or three
covertiles stacked upon each other were found in X-60 just above the "floor" and extending into the trench wall to the north. There appears to be a depression in the "floor" in X,-61,60 into which the cover and pan tiles extend. A large column base, the tenth in a row, was uncovered imbedded into the "floor" in meter X,Y,-59/60. The floor in X,Y,Z-59-61 appears to be very well preserved and lies at a depth of ~60cm. All of this area was uncovered to expose "floor," except in most of meters X,Y,Z-59, which remains at ~40cm. The soil of this cut to the floor (from 40cm to 60cm in depth) was light and red-orangish. It contained a moderate amount of tile and little pottery. Carbonized wood was scattered throughout the soil in small specks, and plaster was also present in the soil.
Meters R,S,T-65,64, where the baulk and stump used to be, were excavated with pick
and careful checking of the soil in wheelbarrows. Much fine pottery came from this area (at a depth of ~70cm-90cm). Ionic pottery was recovered along with fine bucchero. The soil was red-orange with plaster, carbon, and tile. It appears that there may be "floor" in meter S-65 at ~80-90cm. If so, then the "floor" is interrupted by a rock packing in ~T-66-69. A great deal of tile was encountered at ~70cm RST-64 and work changed to mestaline. There appears to be a "tile fall" in these meters at this depth. While working with a mestaline a terracotta horse was found. There may be more fragments to this statue, but the soil was too wet to dig for them where the statue fragment was found.
Note that R,S,T-65,64 produced 3 boxes of pottery and two cassette of tile. X,Y,Z-61-59 produced 2 boxes of pottery and two cassette of tile. Meters X,Y-68-70 and beta, gamma-71 together produced ~1 cassetta of tile and little pottery.
