We shave down the lower walls around the inside of the room in Rectangle 22 to remove the soil washed down since the previous season in preparation for a shallow cut into virgin soil finding a few bits of pottery and over a basket of tile. We begin this cut, about 5-10cm deep into a light, yellow soil with some red-orange matter in grids A-B 2-3, A4.

Also we begin the first of at least two cuts in the previously dug Agger 11 Extension to reach virgin soil and about the level of Rect. 22. This cut, in grids 0-4 AA-CC is 20-30cm deep, the soil light, clayey and granular, and finds sparse. We contine the cut moving east into quadrents BB-CC Z.

Afternoon

We even out and extend the shallow cut in the floor of Rectangle 22. In quadrents 2-3 B-E. Scant pottery in the light, yellowish soil; also a fair amount of plaster and large pieces of tile, wood and charcoal, especially in a plaster fall uncovered in 0-3. Samples are taken. The cut is now 5-10cm deep. Note also a grainy yellow matter found in lumps in the fall and collected.
