Work continued in Trench 19.  Three workmen cleared the area above the rocks in grids E-I/47-50 ( see drawing on p. 63 ).  The rocks in this area appear to be dumped arbitrarily rather than set as foundations - with the exception of those in grid H-I/49-50 which form a straight line on one side running N-S.  At this edge, there is also a vertical division in the strata between the yellowish-brown and the pinkish-red ( ).

  • 2 cassetti of tiles discarded
  • 1 cassette of pottery
  • 1/3 cassette of bones

The three men then proceeded to take down the dike running N-S in the 47th meter between E and I ( ).  The south end of this trench contains much pottery in the brown stratum, including many small sherds of bucchero.  This area is also producing many bones and small bits of carbon, as well as tile fragments.  The north end of the dike contained a very heavy concentration of tiles, a continuation of the tile fall to the west.  The majority of tiles were pan tiles and cover tiles, with a few pithoi fragments.  This dike also produced 2 gorgon antefixes and fragments of banquet frieze plaque.

  • 8 cassetti of tiles discarded
  • 2 cassetti of pottery
