Clearing with brushes and mestaline continued in meters J/11-12 to a depth of ca. 79 cm. Again the soil in meter J/11 consisted primarily of galestra and contained no material. The soil in the northeastern corner of meter J/11 and meter J/12 was dark brown in color and of a very dense consistency. One quarter of a box of coarseware sherds, two pieces of vitrified tile and a few smal chunks of plaster were recovered in the dark brown soil. Clearing also continued in meter K/15 and the southern quarter of meter K/16. The soil here was light yellow-grey in color and contained no material. The trench floor in meter H-I/14 was swept down for clearer definition.
of Meters H-I/14: Detail of Area of Red Burning and Plaster looking northwest
During brushing a red "stain" like that uncovered around the roasting pit in meters H-I/11-12 was uncovered curving around from the southwestern corner of meter H/14 to a point approximately at the meter's northeastern edge. The "stain" measures ca. 50-70 cm. In thickness and displays traces of a plaster lining at serveral points along its interior edge. However, unlike the roasting pit to the south, no stones were found around the perimeter of the feature. The appearance of the red "stain" was first recorded at a depth of ca. 117 cm. Additional brushing to the east in meter I/14 revealed no further traces of the red stain. In addition, the presence of the stone concentratino uncovered last year along the western edge of meter I/13-14 and in meters J-K/13-14 hampered the
search for traces fo the stain in this area. It was decided therfore to lift the stones in order to be able to investigate the area more thoroughly. (See trench plan on p. 138 for the position of the stone concentration). Before clearing the stones were swept and phtographed. Clearing was then begun in the northwestern corner of the concentration in meter I/14. The soil around the rocks was dark brown in color with a heavy concentration of carbon. One quarter of a cassetta of small pieces of tile, one quarter of a bag of small chunks of vitrified tile, one piece of slag and a few pieces of burned bone were found in the soil around the stone. Three boxes of coarseware and impasto sherds, including many burned pieces were also discovered.
