Agger 2D

It was decided to begin work on the smaller of the 2 mud walls - the one in Agger 2D.  The wall was

shaved down and exposed on all sides to leave only it standing; then, it was systematically removed with the certainty which finds were from outside the wall and which from inside.  In addition to the usual tiles and coarse pottery, found on the southern exterior against the wall were:

  1. a lateral sima cornice
  2. A left hand from a satue
  3. A horse's hoof

As noted before in previous years, a thin yellowish/tan band defined the outer edge of the wall and clearly separated the wall from the agger.  The mud wall itself (85 cm wide) was seen to be constructed in alternating wide bands of brown mud/clay (9-10 cm in width) and narrow bands (approximately 1

cm wide) of red clay mixed with many bits of carbon.  An exposed profile of the mud wall (1 meter long) was left standing for the time being.

In the brown and red bands immediately over the foundation stones were found a comparatively heavy concentration of small bits of bronze, stones, and broken pottery, which were mainly coarseware but with some fine bucchero and one sherd of Italo-Corinthian fulsir mixed in.

Over the foundation stones themselves forming the actual foundation in places had been laid large puieces of broken coarseware pottery, probably pithos fragments, and tiles to act as a bedding for the mud wall above.  This level was cleaned and exposed.  It should be noted

that the stone foundation averaged 5-7 cm below the floor levels of the rooms it formed.

Agger 2B

Work began on the other mud wall ( see plan p. 1 ), but only preliminary of the exterior was possible today.

Found: 2 boxes of tiles, some pottery fragments, and pieces of the horserace frieze with paint preserved on some.
