Morning

We dig in T25 continuing cut 3 south to 12Y3 g, 14-15 delta, and in R22 moving eas in D 2-3.

In T25 we encounter dark burn in the floor and probe into it in south alpha 12 to remove a large pan tile and some chunks of a red-orange plaster which occurs in that area.  We suspect that this may indicate a ground level.  In g 14-15 the soil grows dark and coarse in contrast to the yellow, clayey earth typical of this cut.  Pottery is sparse until beta, when it grows increasingly frequen and by g extremely so.  In western cut 3 by south beta yellow is replaced by a dark soil like that of cut 2.  In beta-g 12 we uncover an enormous mass of terracotta, probably numerous superimposed pithos fragments.  This is photographed and left (see opp. p.) in the black soil of g-delta we remove an enormous stump.  The pottery of cut 3 is often large fragments and often heavy coarse or medium-size impasto.  It is often burned, sometimes totally.  Tile is also frequent but with no pattern of distribution.  Among the tile, fragments # 11 nd 2 (?) are unusual, #'s 8, 14, 1 decorative.  Few bits of bronze turn up but among these # 6 is noteworthy.  Bone is fairly common and caries.  # 1, an antler, appears worked as does # 17.

The burn soil of R22 yields a full carton and more of pottery and small amounts of tile, plaster, and bronze slag, but above all many more black seeds, primarily "beans" and "barley."  We nearly reach E.  See #

Afternoon

We continue the current cut in R22 D 2-3 reaching the western margin of quadrants P 2 and 3.  Seeds (# 1), pottery, often find (# 2) and slags (#'s 3 and 4) continue to appear with relative frequency.
