Total pottery for T-48: 2798 sherds
T-48 yielded a fair amount of pottery in this excavation season. In all loci, by far the most common type of pottery recovered was impasto. Additionally, a significant amount of both coarseware and fine impasto sherds were found; very little bucchero was uncovered in T-48 this season.
Most of the loci of T-48 yielded very little pottery. Most notably, only 12 sherds of pottery were recovered from Locus 9 , a hard packed, yellowish soil containing small carbon inclusions. However, over half of the pottery found in T-48 was excavated from three loci: Loci 5 , 8 , and 10 . Locus 5 , which was comprised of a gray, flaky, galestra-like soil, produced 335 sherds of pottery; Locus 5 though was a very thick soil package, and so ceramics were not densely concentrated in this locus. 517 sherds of pottery were recovered from Locus 8 , a stratum of olive brown, slightly mottled soil. Locus 8 was not nearly as thick as Locus 5 , and thus ceramics were concentrated more densely in Locus 8 than in Locus 5 .
The stratum that yielded the most pottery was Locus 10 , which was made up of an extremely plaster-rich and mottled soil containing inclusions of terracotta and carbon. Over one-third of all pottery found in T-48 was recovered from this locus. Additionally, Locus 10 , in comparison with other loci, contained relatively little impasto while yielding relatively high quantities of both coarseware and fine impasto. Furthermore, the vast majority of bucchero recovered from T-48 this season was from Locus 10 .
Very little datable pottery was recovered from T-48 this excavation season. However, some sherds of Italo-Corinthian pottery were found, which may provide datable information. From Locus 5 , this includes a handle fragment ( 20070082 ), from Locus 8 a body sherd ( 20070132 ), and from Locus 10 an incised sherd of creamware ( 20070242 ), a painted body sherd ( 20070247 ), two sherds from a globular aryballos ( 20070187 and 20070310 ), another painted and incised body sherd ( 20070311 ), and a painted base ( 20070257 ). Additionally, some sherds of bucchero were found which may also be datable. From Locus 3 , there is a body sherd with an incised fan pattern ( 20070016 ), and from Locus 5 a body sherd with incised concentric circles ( 20070080 ) and a shoulder fragment with a register of incised chevrons ( 20070106 ).
